Why Proper Disposal Matters
When a car leaves your hands without a proper record, a few things can go wrong:
A signed bill of sale and a legitimate buyer protect you from all of this.
Tickets and tolls.
If someone drives or parks it after you "gave it away," fines can come back to the registered owner.
Abandonment.
A car dumped on a road or in a field can be traced back to you by its VIN.
Insurance confusion.
Without proof of sale, cancelling your policy can be harder.
Environmental damage.
Cars broken up in someone's backyard leak oil, coolant and fuel into the ground.
Your Options for Disposing of a Car in Edmonton
Sell it to a licensed buyer (us)
You get paid, the car is picked up free, and you get a bill of sale. This is the simplest option for most people.
Donate it
Some charities accept cars and may issue a tax receipt for the amount they receive. It's a good option if that matters to you. Check how the charity handles pickup and what the receipt will actually be for.
Give it away privately
Fine if the car still runs and you know the person, but still fill out a bill of sale (even for $1) to show the transfer.
Leave it sitting
Not really disposal. It keeps losing value and can attract complaints or City notices.
The Paperwork, Simply
Alberta's bill of sale needs the full names and addresses of buyer and seller, the VIN, the vehicle's year, make, model, style and colour, the price, and both signatures. We bring a completed form to every pickup. After the sale:
- Keep your copy of the bill of sale
- Remove and keep your licence plates
- Cancel or transfer your insurance
How Your Vehicle Is Recycled
Disposal doesn't mean the dump. Fluids are drained and recycled. Batteries go to battery recyclers. Tires are sent for tire recycling. Usable parts are pulled and resold. The remaining shell is shredded and the metal is melted down for new steel. Very little of an end-of-life vehicle ends up as waste.
