How a Scrap Dealer Prices a Vehicle
Scrap pricing is more straightforward than people think. The main factors are:
Weight.
Heavier vehicles contain more steel.
Current metal prices.
These go up and down with global markets, so prices change over time.
Catalytic converter.
Contains platinum, palladium and rhodium, and is valued separately.
Aluminum.
Aluminum wheels, and on some vehicles aluminum engine blocks or body panels, are worth more per kilo than steel.
Reusable parts.
Anything that can be resold rather than shredded adds to the price.
Scrap Dealing in Alberta: The Rules
Since November 2020, Alberta has required scrap metal dealers and recyclers to check the seller's original government photo ID, record each transaction in a provincial system, and pay by traceable methods rather than cash. Sellers must be 18 or older. These rules were brought in to reduce metal theft, especially catalytic converter theft. We follow them on every purchase.
