Replace the Key or Sell Without It?
Replacing a modern key isn't cheap. A basic key with a chip, a remote key or a push-start fob often runs a few hundred dollars once it's cut and programmed. Some European and luxury models cost a lot more and may need to be towed to a dealer first. If the car is worth selling but not worth much, that cost can eat most of its value. In that case, selling it without a key makes sense.
If the car is newer and worth a lot, getting a key made first will likely raise its value more than the key costs. We'll be honest about which side your car falls on.
How We Move a Car With No Key
Without a key, a car is usually stuck in park with the steering wheel locked. That sounds like a problem, but it's routine for us:
It takes a little longer than a normal pickup, but there's no extra charge.
- Wheel dollies go under the locked wheels so the car rolls without the wheels turning
- Go-jacks let us move the car sideways out of tight spots
- The winch pulls the car onto the flatbed on its dollies
- For locked doors, we don't need to get inside at all

Proving Ownership Without Keys
Keys don't prove ownership, but registration does. On pickup day, you'll need the registration in your name and your original government photo ID. If the car was bought without keys at an auction or sale, bring the bill of sale from that purchase. If something is missing, call ahead so we can confirm it's sorted out first. We can't buy a car if we can't verify the seller owns it.
Does Not Having Keys Lower My Offer?
Sometimes slightly. Without a key, we can't confirm the car runs, so we price it more conservatively than a car we can start. For cars that are junk or scrap anyway, it usually makes no difference.
